Where to go, and what to expect

  • Cape Cod National Seashore — Fort Hill

    Eastham, Massachusetts · 26 challenges

A whaling captain's yellow house on a hill above an enormous salt marsh, and a boulder people sharpened their tools on long before the town existed. A one-mile loop takes in both.

About an hour and a half

Underfoot. A one-mile loop over the hill and out along the edge of the marsh.

Parking. Free — the Seashore charges only at its six beaches, and Fort Hill is not one of them. There are two lots, lower and upper.

  • Salt Pond & Nauset Marsh

    Eastham, Massachusetts · 22 challenges

A round pond joined to the sea by a narrow neck, a marsh full of birds behind it, and a loop that runs along the edge of both before turning back through a forest that is still growing itself back.

Underfoot. Rated easy, with a solid surface, some log steps on the slopes and a moderate grade. The loop takes about an hour. Take care where it crosses the bike trail.

Parking. Free. Park at the Salt Pond Visitor Center, 50 Nauset Road, just off Route 6. No dogs are allowed on this trail — the Seashore does not permit them on any of its walking trails.

  • The Three Sisters

    Eastham, Massachusetts · 22 challenges

Three lighthouses standing in a clearing in the woods, half a mile from the sea they were built for. Sailors called them the Three Sisters because from out on the water they looked like women in white dresses wearing black hats.

    About an hourStroller fine

Underfoot. A short flat walk from the lot to the clearing where the towers stand.

Parking. Free. There is a small lot at 751 Cable Road.
